Official: Winning lottery ticket sold in Maryland

posted by weatebl

in editorial

(AP) ? Maryland lottery officials announced early Saturday their state sold what could become the world’s largest lottery payout of all-time, but it wasn’t immediately clear if that ticket holder would get sole possession of the $640 million jackpot or have to split it with other winners.

Carole Everett, director of communications for the Maryland Lottery, said the winning Mega Millions ticket was purchased at a retailer in Baltimore County. She said it’s too early to know any other information about the lucky ticket-holder or whether others were sold elsewhere in the nation.

The winning numbers were 02-04-23-38-46, and the Mega Ball 23.

National lottery officials were expecting to list early Saturday on their website how many winning tickets were sold and from what states, but Maryland sent out its news release and called media organizations hours before the scheduled announcement. The headline of its news release said the winning sale was “one of several nationwide,” but Everett told The Associated Press she couldn’t immediately confirm any others.

Everett said the last time a ticket from the state won a major national jackpot was 2008 when a ticket sold for $24 million.

“We’re thrilled,” she said. “We’re due and excited.”

The estimated jackpot dwarfs the previous $390 million record, which was split in 2007 by two winners who bought tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.

Google reCAPTCHAs now featuring Street View addresses, 221b Baker St. to get even more famous

If you’ve enjoyed decrypting the often frustratingly skewed (and occasionally humorously juxtaposed) reCAPTCHAs, you might be a bit sad to learn that Google is mixing things up with some rather more boring numerals. The combinations of two words are typically used as part of a registration form to ensure the registrant is, indeed, human. Google is now replacing one of the words in some of its reCAPTCHA forms with photos gleaned from Street View service. Google says it uses these numbers internally to improve the accuracy of Street View and that pulling them into reCAPTCHAs is part of an “experiment” to “determine if using imagery might also be an effective way to further refine our tools for fighting machine and bot-related abuse online.”

In other words, Google’s bots are already capable of decoding these numbers, which makes this all sound like a bit of a challenge to the rest of the OCR-loving coders in the world. Any takers?

How Long Can You Really Use Your Spare Tire?

posted by weatebl

in editorial

Since the spare tire is used so infrequently, carmakers have switched to narrow, compact spares to save space and weight. Of course, a spare tire is a lifesaver when regular tires go pop, but leaving the temporary tire on for longer than the manufacturer recommends invites a host of problems. First, a temporary spare isn’t as durable as a normal tire. The real strength of a tire comes from the plies?layers of steel and polyester underneath the rubber?and spares don’t have as many plies as regular tires. A typical space-saver spare has only one layer of polyester in the sidewall and two belts of steel with a layer of polyester in the tread?about half as many plies as a normal tire. This greatly limits puncture resistance and cornering ability. In addition, as the name implies, space-saver tires are intended to take up less room in car and crossover trunks so that those trunks can be deeper. For that reason, these tires are narrower and have a smaller contact patch. This reduces the amount of traction for the tire, increasing stopping distances and making handling potentially unpredictable in emergency maneuvers. It also means ABS and traction control aren’t as effective at keeping you out of danger. And you’re not going to have the same ground clearance. If you’re towing a trailer, you’ll have to leave it behind?spares have much lower load ratings than regular tires. Long-term use of the spare can cause a serious mechanical issue, too: The smaller-diameter tire can put a lot of stress on your differential.

The differential has a tricky job. It transmits engine power to the wheels from the transmission, but it also lets the left and right wheels turn at different speeds. This is essential for cornering. In a turn, the path of the inside wheel is shorter than that of the outside wheel, which means they travel at different speeds. When your car is driving in a straight line, the differential isn’t in use and there’s little wear and tear on its gears and bearings. But because the spare is smaller than the opposing wheel on the same axle, it must turn faster to keep up with the speed of the car, making the differential work to account for the variation. It’s as if the car is constantly in a turn. Leave the spare on long enough and the grease lubricating the differential will begin to break down, accelerating wear between the gears and the clutch plates if it’s a limited-slip differential. For all these reasons, manufacturers suggest keeping speeds below 50 mph and using the spare tire only for limited distances if possible. If a compact spare is ever damaged, either the tire itself or the wheel, the entire spare should be replaced rather than repaired. And don’t forget to check the pressure in your spare every time you check the pressure in your other tires?it’s important to make sure your safety net is, in fact, safe.

Azealia Banks Dropping 1991 EP In April

GQ gives Harlem MC a splashy look in next month’s Style issue, where Banks talks meeting Kanye and getting money.

Don’t be fooled by her Twitter tussles with rap vets: Azealia Banks is on her grind. The Harlem MC didn’t let expulsion from this year’s XXL Freshman Class keep her down. Instead, she’s kept up her buzz up, at a noise level guaranteed to pick up a few decibels when she drops a new EP next month.

Banks confirmed via tweet this week that 1991 is due April 17 and will include the title track, plus “Grand Prix.” The project’s title is a nod to the year that gave us seminal albums like Nirvana’s Nevermind, and artists like the 20-year-old Banks.

As for sonic expectations, we’re hoping her brand-new “F— Up the Fun” is a hint at what’s to come. On the Diplo-produced number, the “212″ rapper channels another New York femcee — Bedford-Stuyvesant’s Foxy Brown — spitting rapid-fire over a relentless bass line. (Still no word on the whereabouts of her promised 212 EP, though, as Pitchfork pointed out.)

And while Banks took issue with fellow upstart Iggy Azalea landing a prime spot on the aforementioned XXL cover, the Aussie rapper can’t yet claim a full page in men’s bible GQ. The potty-mouthed Yung Rapunzel gets glossy revenge in the magazine’s April “Style” issue, where they styled the cocoa beauty in a striped tank and petal-shaped yellow shorts; her smile is sly and her locks wind-blown.

After breaking through on last fall’s viral smash “212,” Banks is at work on her Interscope debut, due in September. She’s tapped A-list U.K. producer Paul Epworth (Florence and the Machine, Foster the People) for an assist on Broke With Expensive Taste. In the accompanying GQ interview, Azealia spouts off about being an Internet sensation, Kanye West and who inspires her musically (“Azealia Banks”) — all with that unmistakable Uptown ‘tude.

“It’s cool,” she says of meeting bold-face fans like Yeezy. “But they’re just people. The skies don’t part and glow orange.” Are you looking forward to Azealia’s EP? Tell us in the comments!

Robo-readers: the new teachers’ helper in the U.S.

posted by weatebl

in editorial

(Reuters) – American high school students are terrible writers, and one education reform group thinks it has an answer: robots.

Or, more accurately, robo-readers – computers programmed to scan student essays and spit out a grade.

The theory is that teachers would assign more writing if they didn’t have to read it. And the more writing students do, the better at it they’ll become – even if the primary audience for their prose is a string of algorithms.

That sounds logical to Mark Shermis, dean of the College of Education at the University of Akron. He’s helping to supervise a contest, set up by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, that promises $100,000 in prize money to programmers who write the best automated grading software.

“If you’re a high school teacher and you give a writing assignment, you’re walking home with 150 essays,” Shermis said. “You’re going to need some help.”

But help from a robo-reader?

“Wow,” said Thomas Jehn, director of the Harvard College Writing Program. He paused a moment.

“It’s horrifying,” he said at last.

Automated essay grading was first proposed in the 1960s, but computers back then were not up to the task. In the late 1990s, as technology improved, several textbook and testing companies jumped into the field.

Today, computers are used to grade essays on South Dakota’s student writing assessments and a handful of other high-stakes exams, including the TOEFL test of English fluency, taken by foreign students.

But machines do not grade essays on either the SAT or the ACT, the two primary college entrance exams. And American teachers by and large have been reluctant to turn their students’ homework assignments over to robo-graders.

The Hewlett contest aims to change that by demonstrating that computers can grade as perceptively as English teachers – only much more quickly and without all that depressing red ink.

Automated essay scoring is “nonjudgmental,” Shermis said. “And it can be done 24/7. If students finish an essay at 10 p.m., they get feedback at 10:01.”

Take, for instance, the Intelligent Essay Assessor, a web-based tool marketed by Pearson Education, Inc. Within seconds, it can analyze an essay for spelling, grammar, organization and other traits and prompt students to make revisions. The program scans for key words and analyzes semantic patterns, and Pearson boasts it “can ‘understand’ the meaning of text much the same as a human reader.”

Jehn, the Harvard writing instructor, isn’t so sure.

He argues that the best way to teach good writing is to help students wrestle with ideas; misspellings and syntax errors in early drafts should be ignored in favor of talking through the thesis. “Try to find the idea that’s percolating,” he said. “Then start looking for whether the commas are in the right place.” No computer, he said, can do that.

What’s more, Jehn said he worries that students will give up striving to craft a beautiful metaphor or insightful analogy if they know their essays will not be read, but scanned for a split second by a computer program.

“I like to know I’m writing for a real flesh-and-blood reader who is excited by the words on the page,” Jehn said. “I’m sure children feel the same way.”

Even supporters of robo-grading acknowledge its limitations.

A prankster could outwit many scoring programs by jumbling key phrases in a nonsensical order. An essay about Christopher Columbus might ramble on about Queen Isabella sailing with 1492 soldiers to the Island of Ferdinand — and still be rated as solidly on topic, Shermis said.

Computers also have a hard time dealing with experimental prose. They favor conformity over creativity.

“They hate poetry,” said David Williamson, senior research director at the nonprofit Educational Testing Service, which received a patent in late 2010 for an Automatic Essay Scoring System.

But Williamson argues that automated graders aren’t meant to identify the next James Joyce. They don’t judge artistic merit; they measure how effectively a writer communicates basic ideas. That’s a skill many U.S. students lack. Just one in four high-school seniors was rated proficient on the most recent national writing assessment.

The Hewlett Foundation kicked off its robo-grading contest by testing several programs already on the market. Results won’t be released for several weeks, but Hewlett officials said they did very well.

Hewlett then challenged amateurs to come up with their own algorithms.

The contest, hosted on the data science website Kaggle.com, has drawn hundreds of competitors from all walks of life. They have until April 30 to write programs that will judge essays studded with awkward phrases such as, “I slouch my bag on to my shoulder” or “When I got my stitches some parts hurted.”

The goal is to get the computer to give each essay the same score a human grader would.

Martin O’Leary, a glacier scientist at the University of Michigan, has been working on the contest for weeks.

Poring over thousands of sample essays, he discovered that human graders generally don’t give students extra points for using sophisticated vocabulary. So he scrapped plans to have his computer scan the essays for rare words.

Instead, he has his robo-grader count punctuation marks. “The number of commas is a very strong predictor of score,” O’Leary said. “It’s kind of weird. But the more, the better.”

As he digs into the data, O’Leary has run into a dismaying truth: The human graders he’s trying to match are inconsistent. They disagree with one another on the merits of a given essay. They award scores that seem random. Indeed, studies have shown that human readers are influenced by factors that should be irrelevant, such as how neatly a student writes.

“The reality is, humans are not very good at doing this,” said Steve Graham, a Vanderbilt University professor who has researched essay grading techniques. “It’s inevitable,” he said, that robo-graders will soon take over.

O’Leary won’t mind when that day comes. He tests his program against student prose that has already been graded by a teacher. When the scores diverge, O’Leary reads the essay to find out why.

“More often than not,” he said, “I agree with the computer.”

Recreational Sports as a Boredom Buster for Those with …

posted by weatebl

in editorial

Anyone familiar with ADHD understands that boredom is one of the aspects that cause hyperactive behaviour. When an individual with ADHD becomes bored, the initial reaction is to find something, anything, which will relieve boredom. Unfortunately, for an individual with this behavioural issue, the boredom relief may come in the form of destructive behaviour. Those with ADHD are often thrill seekers, and since their impulse control is below average, oftentimes, a reasonable choice to cure the boredom cannot be made, which leaves them sometimes facing negative consequences for choices they did not necessarily have control over.

Intolerance for Boredom
For someone with ADHD, boredom is not the same for someone without ADHD. For someone with ADHD, boredom is actually intolerable both physically and mentally. Those without ADHD may find it hard to comprehend, and may not understand how boredom could cause such distress.

For someone with ADHD, the minute boredom presents itself, action must be taken to dissuade it. Furthermore, the person with ADHD typically does not even realize they are acting in a hyperactive manner, only realising they need to get rid of the boredom and if that requires multi-tasking at the speed of a superhero, then so be it.

Producing Constructive Reactions to Boredom
Since those with ADHD commonly revert to destructive behaviours as part of a symptom of the disorder, it may be necessary to put a plan into place, so when the individual senses a hyperactive bout, he/she can attempt to deal with it in a constructive way. While this will not be easy or appealing, beginning to recognise triggers can help with redirecting behaviour.

One way to attempt changes in behaviour may be to develop a list of constructive hobbies, such as drawing, writing or participating in athletic activities. This is no easy feat, but as part of cognitive therapy, the repeated practice of this one behaviour change can benefit the individual with ADHD greatly.

Exercise as the Ultimate Boredom Buster
Engaging in physical fitness can be one of the best boredom busters. Physical activity requires the use of both our mental and physical existence. It requires concentration, hand-eye coordination and is a great outlet for offsetting built up energy. But where can an individual with behavioural issues go to engage in fitness programs with like-minded individuals?

At a fitness centre designed for individuals with disabilities, the person struggling with hyperactive tendencies will find an outlet in one of the many recreational programs that are tailor made to fit the needs of those with intellectual disabilities, behavioural issues, and minor mobility issues. A variety of classes are available that include: MMA fitness, (Mixed Martial Arts fitness), Tennis, Indoor Soccer, Basketball, Boxing Drills, and Dance (including Hip-Hop and Zumba). All of the sports offered require mental and physical engagement and may be just the thing an individual with ADHD can add to their hobby list as a constructive outlet for when boredom sets in.

Samsung’s vacuum tube driven speaker lineup gets priced for US, available this spring (update)

posted by weatebl

Image

It’s no secret that Samsung’s been teasing a major interest in premium audio since CES, blending digitally powered speakers with vacuum tube pre-amplifiers. We didn’t get a chance to check the systems out in Vegas, but today the company’s spilling the details regarding US pricing on a trio of systems, all of which will be available in the spring. The star of the show is the $800 DA-E750 Audio Dock, featuring the rear-mounted dual dock for Galaxy (charging only) and iOS devices we first saw last month. Clad in a polished wood case (available in black or cherry), the 2.1 stereo system pumps out up to 100 watts of power through its glass fiber speakers and tweeters. As an added touch, its JJ Electronics 12AU7 tubes (the same you could use for guitar amps) are sunken in from its top under glass, allowing for clear view of their glow. Best of all, aside from the requisite USB and 3.5mm inputs, the DA-870 works wirelessly with Samsung’s AllShare Play, AirPlay and Bluetooth 3.0 w/ aptX.

Moving past the HiFi category, Samsung’s also priced a duo of surround sound systems aimed at the home theater market. To start, there’s the $1,000 HT-E6730W Blu-ray 3D 7.1 home theater system and its $800 5.1 sibling, the HT-E6500W Blu-ray 3D — both of which feature the same tube pre-amp and similar wireless capabilities as the DA-E750. Notably, the E6730W features a tiltable top speaker on each of its stereo towers, allowing for a more personalized output depending on your room. Furthermore, if you happen to have a DA-E750, too, you’ll be able to stream the audio via Bluetooth if you find yourself far away from your television. There’s no exact date on when you’ll be able snag any of them, but Samsung notes that the 5.1 system is currently shipping.

Update: You’ll find a press release with all the drool-inducing details after the break.
